Why does everyone always urge us to temper our dreams, to settle and be more “realistic”? Why are high standards or ambitious goals dismissed as impractical? From my experience, I’ve come to realize one powerful truth: it’s always crazy until it’s done.
The Power of Delusional Thinking
Welcome back to *It Girl Playbook*, where today we're celebrating the power of what many might call delusional thinking. Delusional thinking isn't about losing touch with reality—it’s about holding on to faith when your current reality gives you no reason to believe. This concept is beautifully captured in a quote from a book I read, which states, “Delusion gives you faith when there is absolutely nothing in your present life that indicates you should believe.” Whether it’s envisioning a peaceful family dynamic when you've only known toxicity, dreaming of financial stability when you've grown up in poverty, or aspiring for a loving relationship after experiencing abuse, delusion can be the only thing that fuels our drive toward a better life.
A Personal Journey Towards Wealth
Personally, I've always aimed to be financially independent and support my family, despite growing up in a financially unstable household. Sharing a single bedroom in a basement with my family of four, there were no signs that wealth was within reach. Had I voiced my aspirations, I would have been mocked or advised to "marry rich" instead of striving for financial independence. This journey has taught me that those who often discourage us do so out of their own insecurities. They fear our potential success because it highlights their own stagnation.
Understanding Resistance from Those Close to Us
Resistance often comes from those closest to us, not out of malice, but from a place of fear and self-protection. For instance, my parents, having suffered through business failures, might discourage me from starting my own venture to protect me from potential failure. However, their experiences and fears should not deter our ambitions. We owe it to ourselves to pursue our dreams, regardless of the opinions that surround us.
Inspiration from History: Guglielmo Marconi
To illustrate the transformative power of persistence in the face of disbelief, consider the story of Guglielmo Marconi. Dreaming of sending messages through the air—a concept that seemed ludicrous at the time—Marconi faced immense opposition, including being institutionalized by his own family. Yet, he persisted, eventually inventing the radio and fundamentally changing communication. His story is a testament to the fact that today’s delusions can become tomorrow’s reality.
Closing Thoughts
Let's remember that every groundbreaking achievement was once considered impossible. Allow yourself the freedom to dream big, to be "delusional." Have faith in your own potential and work towards making your seemingly unrealistic dreams come true. Everything is crazy until it is done.
